Kidmin1124 Volunteer Champion of the Week
One of the first special needs ministries I visited was Shades Mountain Baptist Church’s (Birmingham, AL) Hand-in-Hand Ministry. In February of 2009 I began doing research to write a single article on the role of special needs programming inside a typical church children’s ministry. Through the grapevine I heard that Shades Mountain had a heart for children with special needs and I made a connection with Lisa Graves, Minister to Children/Preteens. After a handful of emails and conversations, Amy Kirby, Director of Hand-in-Hand, invited me to the ministry egg hunt in 2009. My experience with the Hand-in-Hand team would ultimately change my writing and change me. The volunteers, parents, and students actively involved in Shades Mountain’s special needs ministry are some of the most kingdom focused believers I have ever experienced!
So…I was delighted to discover that kidmin1124.com is featuring Amy Kirby, Director of Shades Mountain’s Hand-in-Hand Ministry, as this week’s Volunteer Champion of the Week.
Please check out kidmin1124.com, which is devoted to all things children’s ministry and volunteers. Be on the lookout for more writing from this team with a special needs focus as one of their writers, Tonya Langdon, is the director of her church’s special needs ministry.
Shades Mountain Baptist Church’s Hand-in-Hand Ministry has an excellent video about the birth of their ministry on their website – don’t miss it! Shades Mountain’s Hand-in-Hand ministry is also mentioned in these other posts:
