Good Finds! Free Autism Webinar by Friendship Ministries

November 28, 2010

Katie Garvert, Access Ministries Coordinator for Woodmen Valley Chapel (Colorado Springs, CO), recently emailed me the link to an excellent online training designed to equip church volunteers who work with children affected by autism.  Garvert shared that her church’s special needs focused volunteers offered great feedback after listening to the webinar:  Autism & Children’s Ministry.   Garvert recommended the online training for her entire team of special needs volunteers.  She shared that the Access ministry servants, many of whom have limited exposure to special needs, found the free online training helpful and worth their time.

The 34-minute webinar is led by Nella Uitvlugt, Executive Director of Friendship Ministries.  The webinar provides basic definitions and descriptions of behaviors and diagnoses related to autism.  In addition, the training gives excellent and relevant guidance for church settings.  I recommend this short training to volunteers serving in disability focused classrooms as well as typical children’s ministry programming.

  1. Amy, I really like Nella’s focus on the need for us to make adjustments rather than expecting special needs children to adjust to us. It reminds me of Gary Thomas’s (Sacred Parenting) emphasis on kids being agents of sanctification in our lives as parents. We often think that it our responsibility to direct our children toward holiness, but often kids are God’s means of helping us grow.
